About the Roanoke Valley area
The Roanoke Valley in southwest Virginia is an area adjacent to and including the Roanoke river between the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and the Appalachian Plateau to the west. It is part of the Great Appalachian Valley which includes the Shenandoah valley to the north. The valley includes much of Roanoke County, and two independent cities; Roanoke City and Salem as well as the town of Vinton. Both the Appalachian trail and the Blue Ridge parkway skirt the valley.
