About the New River Valley and Radford
The New River is part of the Ohio river watershed and flows north through the states of North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. The New River is considered the second oldest river in the world and one of the nation's American Heritage Rivers.
The New river Valley (NRV) comprises the counties of Montgomery (including the towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg), Pulaski, Floyd, Giles and the independent City of Radford. It is part of the Great Appalachian Valley and was one of the first frontier areas in the United States, and was key to encouraging western expansion. A branch of the Great Wagon Road led through the New River Valley. It was also the location of several small American Civil War battles. The New River Valley is home to several fine institutions of higher learning.
